From Exchange Student to Doctor after Host Family Experience
00:05 we never really when we looked at who we
00:08 wanted to host specifically said oh it
00:10 must be this type of student or this
00:12 kind of person and so when we picked
00:15 Maui we thought you know we'll see how
00:17 he does and I think he quickly became
00:21 the envy of all the other host families
00:23 because he was just the most amazing kid
00:27 the concept of host family it's just
00:31 amazing because you get placed with
00:34 people you've never known before you've
00:36 never met you never heard their names
00:38 they open up their homes they open up
00:41 their hearts you are from different race
00:44 different background everything is
00:46 different and then suddenly you become
00:48 their son
00:55 at the time my wife was a paramedic very
01:00 busy on call all the time and now we've
01:03 got a chance to hear a lot of those
01:05 calls and that really sparked his
01:09 interest in not only helping other
01:11 people but specifically helping other
01:13 people in the field of medicine when I
01:18 went home after high school I applied to
01:21 be a doctor just because I wanted to be
01:24 like her when I told him that hey I'm
01:27 gonna be a doctor
01:28 we're so excited he sends down all her
01:32 text books all the jati and she heard
01:34 and all stars and they were very very
01:36 helpful and give a lot of credit to Han
01:39 Tullius program WOWY has been an
01:44 excellent example of the positive
01:47 benefits of the yes program long after
01:49 he's been in the US for the last ten
01:52 years even going to med school he finds
01:54 time to go out and volunteer he's done a
01:58 lot of programs on community health
02:00 education he works with other alumni of
02:03 the yes program in Nigeria out there
02:06 actively bettering their communities
02:08 through volunteering we're delighted to
02:11 have another doctor in the family
02:17 you
